The origin of the welcome light or Christmas bridge isn't actually that well known but it is likely to be a version of the Jewish Menorah from the Hanukkah festival of light in early December, possibly combined with the Schwibbogen candle holder from Saxony.
The lights were traditionally used to welcome workers home in the dark months of winter but can now be found in many window sills and even as a welcoming table decoration for the festive period.
The bulbs used in these fittings can vary in voltage so please make sure you have the right version for your decoration - the details should be on the old bulb or on the bridge or decoration itself.
